                                                 Beginning Genealogy Classes

When:   Wednesdays, beginning January 23 at 6:00pm       

Where:  Big Sky Genealogy, Columbus Center, just inside the front entrance

Cost:  $12.00/each.  If you pre-register for all six weeks, the fee is $65.00.  

No prior genealogy experience is necessary nor do you need any computer experience.  
These classes are designed to teach basic research skills.

Class Agenda:

Week 1 - Why do people research; how to get started; developing a filing system

Week 2 - Charts and Forms:  What are they and how they keep you organized  
                 (Students will start a 4 generation chart in class)

Week 3 - Records:  Introduction to the U.S. Federal Census; Social Security Death
              Index and Vital Records:  Birth, Marriage and Death

Week 4Learn more about the U.S. Federal Census and its clues to research

Week 5 - Records:  Immigration and Naturalization; "Not everyone came through 
                 Ellis Island"; a basic explanation of the process and where records can be found

Week 6 - Source Documentation:  Importance of documenting evidence and
                 Preservation:  Basic discussion of preservation do's and don'ts

All classes will include handouts  

Classes will last approximately 1 1/2 hour to 1 3/4 hours, depending upon discussion.
